SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the Gateway Hotel located in Umhlanga, just north of Durban. Tasks included the design of eco-friendly accommodation, conference centre and restaurant facilities, to ensure the hotel appeals to both leisure and business guests.
Additionally, the design included direct access to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping and a seasonal pool bar and pizzeria restaurant were included. The screen surrounding the Gateway Hotel is not only an eye-catching design of leaves, but also an efficient shading technique. It acts as a solar shield for the dominant northern facades of the building.
Location:
Angola
GIBB’s Responsibilities:
SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the Elephant Bay Resort in Angola. The resort is part of a larger estate with additional phases of construction.
The design of Elephant Bay Resort created a contemporary coastal town where architecture embodies local materials and sustainable landscaping, thus establishing a luxurious desert coastal environment.
The design included three-, four- and five-star hotels as well as a town square with apartments, casino and entertainment components. The resort offers diverse components of modern living.
The design caters for various incomes. It includes condominium clusters which provide a middle-income residential product and luxury hill-top villas, which cater to the exclusive end of the market and provides luxury accommodation and entertainment areas.
Client:
Sun Resorts LTD
Location:
Mauritius
GIBB’s Responsibilities:
SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the 5 star luxury Long Beach Resort in Mauritius. The design of the resort flows around a beach with the central piazza as the focus point.
The architectural language explores tropical interpretations of contemporary urban themes, softened by natural forms, local detailing and materials. Buildings integrate seamlessly with the resort’s extensive lush tropical gardens.
The design required consideration of the stronger wind conditions on the east coast of the island, to which a flat roof concept was preferred for better protection from the weather and cyclone conditions.
The guest rooms were positioned along the beachfront and in crescent clusters to achieve the maximum sea views from all terraces. These clusters consist of single-storey rooms closer to the beachfront with elevated double-storeys behind.
These allow un-obscured sea views from all rooms. Additional facilities included a sport centre, gym, lap pool, youth club, spa, dive club, a 1 500 m² main pool with pool bar and restaurant as well as a 500 m² open air pool.
Client:
Hilton Garden Inn
Location:
Gaborone, Botswana
GIBB’s Responsibilities:
SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the Hilton Garden Inn in Gaborone. The project was conceptualised as a complementary public space open to all at ground level, while two buildings blocks, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Commercial Block, rise on either side.
The design was made to be pedestrian-friendly which encourages access by the new Business District community and offers a pleasant area to enjoy a meal at the restaurant or a drink in the hotel’s bar.
The two buildings’ orientation for sunlight gain in winter and protection in summer, translates into major savings in energy efficiency and power consumption. This is a particular advantage given Gaborone’s temperature variations and air conditioning requirements.
