Project name:

Mafutseni - Mliba Road

Client name:

Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Swaziland Government

Location: Swaziland
Cost:

US$5.6 million

Project description

Mafutseni is situated 17 km east of Manzini, the industrial centre of Swaziland, on the main road to Siteki with Mliba lying approximately 33 km to the north.  The project involved the upgrading and bitumenising of the gravel road between these two small settlements.  The Swaziland Government's plan was that this road should form part of an important link between the central and north eastern regions.  The road passes through relatively densely populated areas where cattle ranching, rice and cotton growing and mixed farming are dominant agricultural activities. GIBB was appointed by the Swaziland Government in December 1979 to plan and carry out the detailed design of the road. The planning and design took into account all necessary requirements for site clearance, deviations, purchases of additional land, the location of existing services, and any hydrological constraints. The design and preparation of tender documents was completed in April 1981 but tendering of the work has been delayed following a rescheduling of the road construction programme by the Swaziland Government.

GIBB responsibilities
  • Selection of the route
  • Topographical survey of the centre line of the proposed road
  • Detailed soil investigations along the road and identification of any necessary borrow pits and sources of gravel for construction of the pavement
  • Identification of sources of water for construction
  • Design of the vertical and horizontal alignment and the pavement
  • Design of a crossing over the White Mbuluzi River
  • Cost estimates
