Mgeni System Seawater Desalination

GIBB was appointed to lead a multi-disciplinary team to carry out a pre-feasibility study to augment the Mgeni Water Supply System from large scale seawater desalination of 450 Ml/day.  The project output is a pre-feasibility report elaborating on a holistic approach to augment water supplies through seawater desalination.

Key Features
  • Desalination literature review focusing on International and South African technology and best practises
  • Selection of appropriate desalination technology suited to local conditions
  • Intake and return options of extraction from the sea
  • Selection of suitable sites for seawater abstraction taking into account oceanographic considerations
  • System demands and injection points
  • Design parameters and conceptual design of large scale desalination plants
  • Comparison of reclamation from wastewater treatment works with that of seawater desalination
  • Assessment of source water quality
  • Consideration of alternative renewable energy sources
  • Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Development of a an implementation programme
  • Cost estimates and economics
